REAL BODIES AFTER BABY

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007
Fitness guru Julie Barroukh wants to do for resistance training what Suzanne Somers did for the “Thigh Master.”

Women NEED to do weight training. Period. Cardiovascular exercise and stretching are other important components of a well-rounded fitness program. But weights are key,” she tells The Well Mom.

Preaching the benefits comes from a very personal place for this Los Angeles mom.  The 43-year-old mother of three dropped all of her baby weight and went from a size 12 to a size 4 through muscle building workouts. But it took nearly a decade to generate the motivation to get her tush to the gym.

***image2***  After having three babies in less than four years, Barroukh says she didn’t recognize herself.  One day she caught a glimpse of her sleep deprived self in a mirror and realized she had become someone she barely knew.

“The woman I saw was fat and frumpy…I decided it was time to get my body back,” she says.

The next morning, she signed up for some personal training sessions.  From the start, weights became a central part of her routine three days a week.  Gradually, she started ramping up her heart rate with the elliptical cross trainer, treadmill, and Stairmaster in addition to cutting back on junk food and her portion sizes.   Eight months later, Julie was 40 pounds lighter and on the verge of making another major life change.

With her newfound passion for exercise, Julie became a certified personal trainer and parlayed her expertise as a former TV producer into developing “Moms With Muscle,” a series of fitness DVD’s.

Eight years later, she is still a size 4 and keeping up the habits that changed her life.

I’m just amazed at the power of my body. And it feels good because I know I’m taking care of it now,”
she says.

Meet The Mommy Mantras

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Doyou talk to yourself? Psychologists Diane H. Dillon, Ph.D. and BethanyE. Casarjian, Ph.D. say doing so can really help moms conquer stress, fatigue, and even boredom. In their book, Mommy Mantras: Affirmations and Insights to Keep You from Losing Your Mind, they write about the power of simple phrases and the Zen-like coaching moms can do for themselves in moments of frustration or fury.

A mantra is really just a few words that can help reframe a situation. Something as easy to remember as, “This feeling is temporary,”which can serve as a reminder that “no matter how bad or strong afeeling is during this particular moment, rest assured, it will startto shift as soon as we experience it,” they write.

“Life is really intense and mothering is really intense and weall get sucked into the dark place from time to time,” explainsCasarjian, a mom of three and the clinical director of the NationalEmotional Literacy Project for Youth at Risk. A mantra, she says, “is acall to come back to the inner core, the place that is always therethat we all sort of get pulled away from when you have screamingbabies.”

Dillon, a mother of two and the director of the Child StudyTeam at the School at Columbia University, tells The Well Mom, thephrase “Breathe Now” is her secret weapon.

“Rather than have whatever reaction I am about to have, takinga breath and the five extra seconds it can bring to slow my breathingdown and reflect…is huge,” shesays.

Occasionally, The Well Mom will feature the Buddhist-inspired Mommy Mantras from Dillon and Casarjian’s book.

So this month, if you are in the midst of sleep training, inthe throes of a toddler tantrum or doing your hundredth load of laundryfor the week, try this:BREATHE NOW!
